Cooking with CBD: 5 Rules to Follow

We all need a little something to spice life up and keep our lives interesting and fun! I don’t know about you, but one thing that kept the boredom at bay during quarantine was trying out new recipes. We may have got slightly carried away and ended up infusing CBD into everything from smoothies, to cookies, lattes, and even the infamous banana bread! From all of the trial and error we have learned some lessons about cooking with CBD. If you want to try cooking with CBD, start here with our 5 rules.

1. Your Recipe Needs a Little Fat.

CBD, as well as all cannabinoids, are fat-loving lipophilics. In turn, this means that CBD needs to be infused with a fat or oil-based ingredient in order for It to be used in cooking. When combined with a fat, CBD is most easily and readily absorbed by the body. Butter, olive oil, coconut oil, ghee, and avocado oil are all great healthy fat options.


2. Watch Your Temperature.

Temperature matters with just about any recipe, but it is particularly important when incorporating CBD into a recipe. If exposed to temperatures that are too high, the effectiveness of CBD may decrease because the active component begins to evaporate or is killed off. It is recommended to not exceed 320 degrees while cooking with CBD. This may prolong the cooking process alas patience is required throughout the journey, which brings us to our next rule.


3. Patience is a Virtue… and you MUST have it.

Plain and simple, ingesting CBD that is diluted into food will not be the same experience as if you took a dropper of CBD oil under your tongue. The reason for this is that anything consumed has to go through the gut and liver before reaching the bloodstream. This process of digestion alone takes anywhere from 20 minutes to 6 hours. CBD in food is not going to be as strong or as fast-acting, so if you are looking for a something as such, cooking with CBD is not going to be your best option.

4. Be Mindful of Your Heavy Hand.

Though CBD will not produce any type of "high" that is frequently associated with the cannabis plant, you should still be careful when dosing CBD into your recipe. With baked goods especially, the dose per serving will never be consistent throughout, so you are better off going light than too heavy.  As always with CBD beginners, it is always recommended to start with a low dose to see how you respond. Remember: less is more!

5. You'll Love Sweet, but Don't Forget Savory.

CBD is most often cooked into baked goods like chocolate chip cookies, brownies, and lattes. This is generally because it is easier to cover up the flavor of CBD with the sweetness of sugar or chocolate.
